Three pieces of bread do not specify a fraction until you know the whole and how it was divided. A ratio also needs a reference: two shares compared with three shares means something different from two shares out of three altogether. This guide follows those distinctions through three short examples.
Before doing arithmetic, draw a simple grouping or state the whole in words. You can then check whether a denominator counts all equal pieces, whether two fractions refer to the same amount, and whether a ratio compares parts with each other. The calculation should preserve the relationship you have described.

Count selected pieces and all equal pieces
The loaf in the example is divided into eight equal pieces. Three of those pieces represent 3/8 of that loaf. The eight counts every equal piece in the original whole; the three counts the pieces selected. If pieces were unequal, merely counting them would not establish that fraction of the loaf.
Equivalent fractions give another description of the same amount. Multiplying both terms of 2/3 by four gives 8/12, because 8 divided by 12 equals 2 divided by 3. Multiplying just one term changes the value. Check both terms when comparing the candidate fractions.
Turn a ratio into total equal shares
Dividing 30 items in the ratio 2:3 creates five equal ratio units altogether. One unit contains 30 ÷ 5 = 6 items. The smaller share contains two units, so it has 12 items, while the other share has 18. These counts add back to the given total.
The first share is two fifths of the whole, even though its ratio to the second share is two to three. Write the two comparisons separately before selecting a fraction. This keeps the denominator attached to the intended reference.

Example 1 · Numbers and calculation
A loaf is divided into eight equal pieces. What fraction of the whole is three pieces?
3/8
8/3
3/5
5/8
Read the answer and explanation
Answer: 3/8
The denominator counts all eight equal pieces. The numerator counts the three selected pieces, giving 3/8.

Example 2 · Numbers and calculation
Which fraction equals 2/3?
8/12
2/6
6/8
3/2
Read the answer and explanation
Answer: 8/12
Multiplying both numerator and denominator by 4 gives 8/12. Scaling both by the same nonzero number preserves the fraction's value.

Example 3 · Numbers and calculation
Divide 30 items in the ratio 2:3. How many items are in the smaller share?
18 items
12 items
10 items
15 items
Read the answer and explanation
Answer: 12 items
There are 2 + 3 = 5 ratio units. Each unit is 30 ÷ 5 = 6 items, so the smaller share is 2 × 6 = 12 items.
