Design and photography: choose spacing and time for a purpose

A difficult headline is not necessarily solved by increasing font size. A blurred moving subject is not automatically a failed photograph. In design and photography, connect the variable you adjust with the information or effect you want to communicate.

This guide examines spacing in Latin typography and time recorded in photographs. Rather than treating a font or camera setting as a universal answer, return to text purpose, viewing size and subject motion to explain a choice.

Distinguish one letter pair from overall spacing

Kerning adjusts the space between particular characters, such as A and V. Their shapes can make mathematically equal gaps look uneven. If one pair feels unusually open in a headline, examine that relationship rather than changing every character's spacing at once.

Tracking concerns average spacing across a text block. Increasing it to solve one pair's problem also changes the other pairs. Treat pair-specific and overall adjustments as different scopes so that you can describe precisely what the change is intended to fix.

Consider the vertical spacing between lines

Leading concerns line spacing, whereas character spacing acts horizontally. Keep them distinct rather than grouping both under empty space. Compare the font, size and line length together, considering how the reader finds the beginning of the next line.

Latin typefaces can have different x-heights at the same point size. Equal size numbers therefore do not guarantee equal apparent size or density. Compare the typeface's forms with its spacing at the actual reading size instead of assuming one number settles the design.

Read blur as movement during exposure

A shorter exposure records movement over less time. To reduce blur in a running subject, choose a shorter exposure while balancing the required brightness through other conditions. Changing shutter speed alone does not ensure that every property of the image becomes desirable.

Blur can also communicate movement. Panning follows the subject and changes the relationship between background streaking and subject definition. Decide whether the purpose is to freeze an instant or represent motion over time before judging the same visible blur as success or failure.

Example 1 · Design, typography and photography

What adjusts the spacing of just the A-V pair in a Latin-script headline?

AV
Two letters in a spacing-adjustment example, with space between A and V.
  1. Paper trimming
  2. Alignment of the whole line
  3. Kerning
  4. Leading adjustment
Read the answer and explanation

Answer: Kerning

Kerning adjusts spacing between particular characters, unlike changing average spacing throughout a text range.

Example 2 · Design, typography and photography

What spacing is primarily controlled by leading in typesetting?

  1. Image bleed
  2. Spacing between text lines
  3. A letter's internal counter
  4. Paper thickness
Read the answer and explanation

Answer: Spacing between text lines

Leading controls line spacing, a different dimension from letterspacing and word spacing.

Example 3 · Design, typography and photography

With the same moving subject and lighting, which shutter change reduces motion blur while other exposure settings are compensated?

  1. Shortening the title
  2. A shorter exposure
  3. Only a longer exposure
  4. Necessarily adding a border
Read the answer and explanation

Answer: A shorter exposure

A shorter exposure records less movement. Overall exposure must still be balanced through other settings.
