English Full boxes, remainders and horizontal distance segments Separate loose items from unused capacity Packing 29 items into boxes of six gives 29 = 6 × 4 + 5. The remainder is at least zero and less than six, so there are four full boxes and five loose items. Three boxes with eleven loose items is unfinished: six of those eleven can fill another box. Containing every item needs five boxes, but making all five full would require thirty items. The final box contains five. Its unused capacity is 30 − 29 = 1 item-space, which differs from the five items left after filling four boxes. Neither five full boxes with no remainder nor four full boxes with one loose item preserves the two quantities asked for. An interval with no increase in cumulative distance With time on the horizontal axis and cumulative distance travelled on the vertical axis, a horizontal interval of positive duration has zero distance change. Under this idealised condition its speed is zero, representing a stop. At a constant positive speed v, a positive time change Δt adds distance vΔt > 0, so the segment would not be horizontal. Moving back also adds travelled path length. The vertical axis here is not signed position. Speeding up likewise increases distance and does not describe this horizontal interval.
